Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed in Washington on Sunday, joined by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders. The visit follows his exclusion from a Trump–Putin summit in Alaska, where both leaders promised “robust security guarantees” to Ukraine but failed to secure a ceasefire.
Trump dismissed Ukraine’s hopes of reclaiming Crimea and entering NATO, echoing long-standing Russian positions. On his social media platform, he said:
“Remember how it started. No getting back Obama-given Crimea, and no going into NATO by Ukraine. Some things never change.”
This marked a significant shift, suggesting Washington may favor Russian demands in ongoing negotiations.
Despite blocking NATO membership, Trump floated the idea of NATO-style security guarantees for Ukraine. These would be outside the alliance framework, something France’s Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders said they would press Trump to clarify during Monday’s talks.
Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, hinted that Russia had made “some concessions” over the five Ukrainian regions it partially controls. Reports suggest Trump is inclined to accept Russia’s demand for control over parts of Donetsk and Lugansk in exchange for a frozen frontline in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
Russia, however, continues to insist that Ukraine withdraws entirely from all four regions annexed since 2014.
European leaders voiced concern that Washington might pressure Kyiv into territorial concessions. Poland’s foreign minister warned: “Pressure must be applied to the aggressor, not the victim.” Macron added that only Russia was proposing a peace that amounted to “capitulation.”
Despite rising pressure, Zelensky insisted that Ukraine would not cede territory unilaterally, though he remained open to discussions in a trilateral summit with Trump and Putin.
