In a strict move to tighten security, the US Embassy in Nairobi has reminded Kenyan visa applicants that withholding social media information could cost them their chance to visit America. The Trump administration has ramped up scrutiny, demanding applicants list every social media username or handle they’ve used in the last five years.
The embassy’s notice, released on July 25, made it clear that providing false or incomplete social media details will lead to visa denial—and possibly ban applicants from ever applying again. This policy builds on screening procedures introduced in 2019 but has become significantly stricter since January this year.
Applicants must fill in their email addresses, phone numbers, and all social media handles on the DS-160 form honestly. The government does not require passwords or account access, but the accuracy of the information is non-negotiable.
This social media disclosure demand is part of a broader crackdown on immigration fraud. Just days before, the US Embassy issued a warning against the use of fake documents, highlighting the harsh consequences of visa fraud, including lifetime bans.
“The US government is committed to ending illegal immigration and will pursue criminal charges against fraudsters and those who aid illegal immigrants,” the statement said bluntly.
If you’re applying for a US visa, it’s crucial to understand these changes. Honesty isn’t just the best policy—it’s mandatory. Hiding social media accounts or falsifying information won’t just get your visa rejected; it could close the door on future travel to the US altogether.
