Gaza endured one of the most intense bombardments of the war in a single, devastating half-hour. At least 38 Palestinians were killed as Israeli airstrikes struck multiple locations across the strip, including a school, a fuel station turned refuge, and family homes. The surprise escalation came hours after Israel issued a sweeping evacuation order, warning of an “unprecedented attack” to come.
Local responders reported overwhelming devastation. In eastern Gaza City, Israeli jets hit the Musa bin Nusayr School, where hundreds of displaced civilians had taken shelter. Ten people were confirmed dead, with many more injured or missing. Just miles away in Nuseirat, central Gaza, 15 people were killed when a strike targeted makeshift tents around an abandoned fuel station. In Deir al-Balah, another air raid flattened the Abu Samra family’s three-story home, killing 13.
The Shujaiya neighborhood, often described as a ghost city of shattered concrete, was hit with at least 10 airstrikes aimed at what Israel claimed were Hamas tunnel systems. Locals said the impact shook the ground like a localized earthquake, leaving some areas nearly unreachable by emergency crews. Civil defense teams struggled to reach victims due to equipment shortages and continued strikes.
The offensive drew sharp rebukes from global allies. Leaders of the UK, France, and Canada issued a rare joint warning, signaling potential consequences if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushes forward with plans to assert full control over Gaza. In response, Netanyahu dismissed the warning as a "gift to Hamas" and vowed to stay the course.
Israel’s government simultaneously announced it would permit a limited amount of humanitarian aid into Gaza, a decision that ends an 11-week blockade. But UN officials criticized the move as symbolic, saying the allowed volume falls dramatically short of the basic needs of Gaza’s besieged population.
This latest spike in violence is just one chapter in a war that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale assault into southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a sweeping military campaign that has, according to Gaza’s health authorities, killed more than 53,000 people to date. At least 58 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza, though only 23 are confirmed alive.
Each new round of strikes reopens global debates over proportionality, occupation, and the future of the region. Diplomats warn that the longer the war drags on, the less international support Israel will retain, especially as civilian casualties mount and reconstruction becomes increasingly unimaginable.
The strikes are not only reshaping the terrain of Gaza—they're redrawing the lines of global diplomacy. Western nations that once offered unequivocal support to Israel are now publicly expressing concern and hinting at consequences. Meanwhile, Arab states that once hoped for normalization deals are stepping back, wary of domestic backlash and regional instability.
The situation remains fluid. Aid convoys are trickling in, but not nearly fast enough. Rescue efforts are underway, but hampered. And political leaders on both sides of the divide are speaking to different audiences with competing visions of justice, security, and survival.
