Kenya is taking a bold leap toward a fully digital economy with a groundbreaking investment of $390 million from the World Bank. The Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) is designed to expand broadband infrastructure, lower internet costs, and promote digital innovation. With internet prices expected to drop by 60%, the initiative will make high-speed connectivity more affordable and accessible to entrepreneurs, students, businesses, and rural communities.
The project will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase, spanning 2023 to 2028, will focus on expanding digital infrastructure and improving service delivery. The second phase, from 2026 to 2030, will emphasize data security, smart digital services, and innovation. A major goal is to extend broadband coverage to over 70% of rural and underserved populations, bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth.
One of the key pillars of this initiative is the expansion of last-mile connectivity, ensuring that even remote villages and low-income communities can access fast and reliable internet. This effort aligns with President William Ruto’s vision of transforming Kenya into a regional ICT powerhouse. The One Government Network (OGN), a high-capacity fiber-optic backbone, will be expanded to link government ministries, agencies, and departments, enhancing communication, data sharing, and service delivery.
The rise of 5G technology is also playing a pivotal role in Kenya’s digital transformation. Safaricom’s 5G rollout is already making waves, offering unlimited WiFi packages, high-speed home internet, and business connectivity solutions. Consumers can now purchase the Safaricom 5G router, capable of delivering speeds exceeding 1 Gbps, making streaming, gaming, and remote work smoother than ever. Nokia’s 5G routers have also entered the Kenyan market, providing businesses and homes with cutting-edge connectivity options.
With 5G internet packages becoming more affordable, Kenyan households and enterprises are embracing the next-generation digital revolution. The government is working closely with private-sector investors to mobilize an additional $100 million for broadband expansion, ensuring that fast and reliable internet is available across the country. Safaricom’s 5G bundles and home internet packages are expected to further revolutionize digital access, offering flexible plans tailored to different consumer needs.
To enhance public access to the internet, the Kenyan government has also pledged to establish 25,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. These hotspots will be set up in public spaces, schools, markets, and transportation hubs, providing students, job seekers, and small businesses with free, reliable internet. This move is expected to boost digital literacy, support e-learning, and promote online entrepreneurship, further strengthening Kenya’s digital economy.
Beyond infrastructure, Kenya is making great strides in digitizing public services. Over 19,000 government services are now available online, allowing citizens to access essential documents, apply for licenses, and process transactions remotely. This shift is not only improving efficiency but also reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks and corruption. The KDEAP will enhance the security and resilience of digital government platforms, ensuring seamless and safe access to online services.
The benefits of Kenya’s digital transformation extend beyond connectivity. The initiative will create thousands of new jobs in sectors such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, software development, and digital marketing. With more businesses shifting to e-commerce and digital platforms, the demand for tech-savvy professionals is set to skyrocket. The government is also investing in digital skills training programs, equipping the youth with competitive skills for the global job market.
Kenya’s journey toward a tech-driven economy is gaining momentum. With massive investments in broadband infrastructure, 5G expansion, and digital innovation, the country is setting itself up as a leader in Africa’s digital revolution. By making high-speed internet affordable, accessible, and efficient, Kenya is unlocking new economic opportunities, improving service delivery, and shaping a brighter digital future for its citizens.
