The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has concluded its placement exercise. For thousands of students, this marks the beginning of their higher education journey. However, being placed is only the first step. The period following placement requires careful attention to logistics, finances, and compliance with institutional requirements.
This article offers a step-by-step framework to guide students on what follows after receiving their university placement.
Students should begin by logging into the KUCCPS student portal to verify the course and university where they have been placed. It is crucial to confirm the accuracy of all personal and academic details. If there are any discrepancies, students must contact either KUCCPS or the university's admissions office immediately for correction.
Universities typically publish admission letters on their respective websites shortly after the release of placement results. The admission letter contains vital information, including:
-Admission number
-Reporting date
-Course registration requirements
-Fee structure
-Medical and consent forms
-Orientation schedule
Students are advised to download, print, and carefully read the letter in preparation for the reporting date.
Once the admission letter is available, students can apply for financial aid through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). The process involves:
-Creating an account on the HELB portal
-Filling out the First-Time Undergraduate Loan Application Form
-Uploading certified copies of required documents (national ID, admission letter, KCSE results, guarantors’ details, etc.)

Students must thoroughly review the fee structure attached to the admission letter. Universities often require either full or partial payment of the first semester’s fees before registration. It is important to:
-Ensure payment is made to the correct university bank account
-Retain original bank slips or payment receipts
-Inquire about any optional charges or penalties for late payments
Where HELB funds are not disbursed on time, students may need to make temporary alternative arrangements.
University-provided accommodation is limited and often allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Students should:
-Apply for on-campus accommodation early
-Explore approved private hostels in nearby areas if necessary
-Verify the legitimacy of any off-campus accommodation providers
-Consider safety, proximity, and cost when selecting housing
Universities may publish vetted lists of nearby hostels to assist new students.
The reporting date stated in the admission letter must be strictly adhered to. Upon arrival, students will:

-Receive a student identification card
-Register for academic units and receive timetables
-Attend an orientation program detailing institutional rules, academic procedures, and support services
