Bullet Bras Evolution || Where did Bullet Bras go to?
Tundu Lissu, a prominent Tanzanian opposition leader, is currently facing treason charges after calling for electoral reforms during a rally in Mbinga. His arrest on April 9, 2025, has intensified political tensions in Tanzania, especially as the country approaches its general elections scheduled for October.
Early Life and Education
Born on January 20, 1968, in Mahambe village, Singida region, Lissu pursued his secondary education at Ilboru Secondary School in Arusha, graduating in 1983. He later obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Dar es Salaam and a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
Political Career
Lissu began his political journey with the NCCR-Mageuzi party in the early 1990s before joining CHADEMA in 2004. He served as the Member of Parliament for Singida East from 2010 to 2020 and held positions such as the president of the Tanganyika Law Society and CHADEMA's deputy chairman. In January 2025, he was elected as the chairman of CHADEMA, succeeding Freeman Mbowe.
Assassination Attempt and Exile
In September 2017, Lissu survived an assassination attempt in Dodoma, where he was shot 16 times. Following extensive medical treatment abroad, he returned to Tanzania in 2020 to contest the presidential elections. After the elections, he went into exile in Belgium, returning in January 2023 to re-engage in Tanzanian politics.
Recent Arrest and Treason Charges
On April 9, 2025, Lissu was arrested after a rally in Mbinga, where he called for electoral reforms. He was charged with treason, a capital offense in Tanzania, for allegedly inciting rebellion and calling for election disruption. Lissu was also charged with publishing false information, to which he pleaded not guilty. He is currently detained and is expected to appear in court on April 24, 2025.

CHADEMA's Disqualification from Elections
Following Lissu's arrest, CHADEMA was disqualified from participating in the upcoming general elections after refusing to sign a mandatory code of conduct, citing concerns over electoral fairness. The party has stated that it will not participate in elections without substantial reforms to ensure fairness.
International Response
Human rights organizations have expressed concern over Lissu's arrest and the broader political climate in Tanzania. Amnesty International has called for his immediate release, highlighting the increasing suppression of opposition voices under President Samia Suluhu Hassan's administration.
Tundu Lissu's arrest and the subsequent political developments underscore the challenges facing Tanzania's democratic processes. As the country approaches its general elections, the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for fair and transparent electoral practices.
