Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Friday, May 23, 2025, launched a robust economic empowerment campaign in Kiawara, Kieni West Constituency, Nyeri County. This event marked a significant leg of his tour across central Kenya counties, focusing on revitalizing the grassroots economy through direct support to local SACCOs, market traders, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of inclusive growth by ensuring that financial resources and development programs reach citizens at the community level.
The event in Kiawara drew a substantial number of local residents, SACCO representatives, and small traders who welcomed the Deputy President's address with enthusiasm. This intervention is part of a larger national program targeting economic resilience, especially among youth and women-led enterprises.
Speaking at the event, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperative societies and trader associations, which are often the economic lifeblood of rural communities.
"The government will continue to support structured financial associations like SACCOs because they are the most efficient channels through which empowerment can be felt directly by the people," said Kindiki.
SACCOs in Kieni will benefit from direct financial grants and capacity-building initiatives meant to boost capital flow and encourage group-based micro-investments. This is in line with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s promise to uplift the entrepreneurial capacity of ordinary citizens.
Earlier in the day, DP Kindiki toured the Ndaragwa market in neighboring Nyandarua County, inspecting ongoing construction works aimed at modernizing market infrastructure. These upgrades form part of a national initiative to develop more than 400 modern markets across the country.

The modern markets, as outlined in the government’s grassroots economy blueprint, are expected to feature cold storage facilities, well-structured stalls, ICT hubs, and even daycare centers to accommodate working mothers.
Following the Kiawara event, the Deputy President is scheduled to make additional stops in Naromoru town for a similar economic forum and later in Imenti South Constituency in Meru County, where he will inspect construction work at the Kamachege Market.
Local political leaders present at the Kiawara event endorsed the empowerment program, noting that such hands-on initiatives have a more tangible impact on people's lives than broad, policy-level announcements. Residents, particularly youth and women who form the majority of small-scale entrepreneurs, welcomed the move as timely and necessary.
“We feel seen and included in the national development agenda,” noted one SACCO chairperson, adding that access to capital and markets has been a major challenge for small businesses.
Kindiki’s continued tour and engagement with citizens signal a new approach to leadership—one that prioritizes real-time interaction and locally relevant solutions to economic challenges.

The ultimate goal of these economic outreach programs is to embed financial sustainability within the community. According to DP Kindiki, the government aims to transition small traders from survival-based operations to scalable and competitive businesses that can participate in regional trade.
In addition to the empowerment funding, traders were advised on best practices in group saving, financial literacy, and how to access government-backed loans without falling into debt traps.
Kindiki also reiterated the importance of unity and national stability as the backbone of economic success, stressing that the empowerment projects will be spread equitably across all regions regardless of political affiliations.
After Nyeri, the KCB East Africa Golf Tour and other socio-economic events will continue across the country. The next key event is scheduled for May 31, 2025, at Karen Country Club, Nairobi, reflecting the government’s multi-sectoral approach to community development—ranging from sports and education to economic empowerment.
Kindiki’s itinerary reflects a clear intent: ensure that economic growth is felt on the ground and that the voices of ordinary Kenyans remain central to national development.
