A Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) is a formal confirmation issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to show that a taxpayer—individual or corporate—is compliant with all applicable tax laws. It serves as proof that one has filed all necessary returns and paid due taxes.
This certificate is often required in formal transactions, both in the private sector and in public service, as a measure of financial integrity and responsibility.
A TCC is commonly required in the following circumstances:
-Applying for government tenders or contracts
-Bidding for public procurement opportunities
-Seeking certain jobs, especially in government or parastatals
-Registering a business or applying for trade licenses
-Opening or renewing work permits for foreign nationals
Both individuals and entities are eligible to apply, provided they have a valid KRA PIN and are fully tax compliant.
To obtain a TCC, a taxpayer must:
-File all required tax returns on time
-Pay all outstanding tax liabilities
-Be registered for the appropriate tax obligations (e.g. Income Tax, VAT, PAYE)
-Have no pending enforcement or audit issues with KRA
If there are unresolved tax matters, the application may be rejected, and KRA will provide a reason for denial.
The TCC application is done online via the KRA iTax portal. The steps are:
1.Log in to your iTax account using your PIN and password
2.Click on the "Certificates" tab
3.Select "Apply for Tax Compliance Certificate"
4.Submit the application form
5.Wait for review (KRA typically responds within 7 working days)
If approved, the certificate is generated instantly and can be downloaded directly from your iTax account.
A Tax Compliance Certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. After expiry, one must reapply following the same process. It is important to remain compliant throughout the year to avoid rejection during the renewal process.
The TCC isn’t just a document—it's a signal of trust. It reflects financial discipline and legal conformity. For businesses, it strengthens credibility with clients and partners. For individuals, especially job seekers, it can be the difference between securing and losing an opportunity.
Moreover, the TCC is becoming increasingly mandatory as government institutions tighten enforcement of tax laws. Operating without it may limit access to public opportunities or raise compliance red flags.
The KRA Tax Compliance Certificate is a crucial part of Kenya’s tax and regulatory framework. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, professional, or large business, being tax-compliant ensures uninterrupted access to formal economic opportunities. Always file your returns on time and settle any outstanding taxes to keep your TCC valid and within reach.
