The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a formal security alert to American citizens residing in or visiting Kenya, in anticipation of widespread public demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 2025. The advisory urges U.S. nationals to exercise increased caution due to the potential for unrest and disruption.
According to the Embassy’s notice, protests are expected to take place in Nairobi’s Central Business District, as well as in major towns across all 47 counties. Demonstrations are likely to begin mid-morning and could persist throughout the day. While organizers have indicated intentions for peaceful assembly, the Embassy cautions that such events can escalate unexpectedly into confrontations or violence.
-Significant traffic congestion, road closures, and disruptions to public transportation are anticipated.
-Police presence is expected to be heightened in and around protest zones, and clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement may occur.
-The Embassy warns of a potential for property damage, arrests, or the use of force by security personnel in attempts to disperse crowds.
American citizens are advised to:
-Avoid all areas where protests or large gatherings are occurring.
-Remain indoors or within secure premises during demonstration hours.
-Keep mobile devices charged, monitor local news outlets, and follow guidance from Kenyan authorities and the U.S. Embassy.
-Carry valid identification, including passport and visa documents, at all times.
-Establish contingency communication plans with family or colleagues, and avoid travel through or near affected areas.
The U.S. Embassy remains operational and available to assist American citizens who may require emergency support. U.S. nationals are encouraged to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time updates and alerts.
The security advisory highlights the seriousness of the potential risks associated with the June 25 protests in Kenya. While the right to peaceful protest is acknowledged, the unpredictability of large public gatherings necessitates heightened vigilance.
