Nairobi Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir has announced partial and full road closures across several major routes in the city ahead of Sunday’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A matches. The directive aims to ease traffic congestion and enhance security as thousands of fans are expected to flock to stadiums to support their national teams.
Effective Sunday, August 10, key roads near major stadiums and entry points to the Central Business District (CBD) will be temporarily closed or partially restricted:
Aerodrome Road: Closed from Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.
2. Lang’ata Road: Closed on one side from Madaraka to Lusaka roundabout; traffic diverted via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road.
3. Mombasa Road: Closed on one side from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout; CBD-bound motorists to use Likoni Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass.
4. Thika Road: CBD-bound motorists to use Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road. Those headed to Kasarani Stadium advised to avoid Thika Road unless attending the match.
Public service vehicles (matatus) ferrying fans to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will be diverted via Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road.
Commander Chirchir urged all motorists to adhere to the traffic guidelines, adding that normal flow will resume after the fixtures are concluded.
Two matches are set for Sunday:
-Kenya vs Morocco at 3:00 PM – Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani
-Zambia vs Angola at 6:00 PM – Nyayo Stadium
Kenya leads Group A with 4 points following a win and a draw. Morocco and DRC are tied at 3 points, Angola has 1 point, and Zambia is yet to register any. A win against Morocco would see Kenya qualify for the quarterfinals with a game to spare, triggering a Ksh 60 million bonus pledge by President William Ruto.
Harambee Stars earned a 1–1 draw against Angola despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, after Marvin Odhiambo was shown a red card in the 20th minute.
