Kenya Power has officially announced that its prepaid token purchase services will be temporarily unavailable tonight for a scheduled two-hour period. The service interruption is set to begin at exactly 11:00 PM on Thursday, June 26, and will extend until 1:00 AM the following morning. The disruption will affect all customers on the prepaid system across the country, rendering them unable to purchase electricity tokens during this window.
This planned outage, though brief, is expected to impact thousands of households and small businesses that rely on real-time token purchases to maintain continuous access to electricity. Kenya Power has emphasized that this is a necessary and time-bound exercise, and the firm has moved to reassure the public that all efforts have been made to minimize inconvenience during this process.
According to a statement released by the company, the brief outage will allow Kenya Power’s technical teams to carry out urgent emergency maintenance on the token vending infrastructure. The maintenance work, the utility said, is aimed at optimizing the performance of its prepaid electricity systems and is part of ongoing efforts to modernize its service platforms.
Kenya Power further stated that the exercise is essential for enhancing operational efficiency, improving customer satisfaction, and ensuring that token generation and delivery remain fast, accurate, and secure. In an era where the country’s energy demands are constantly growing and digital platforms are playing an increasingly central role in service delivery, such maintenance activities have become both routine and necessary.
To mitigate the risk of service disruption, Kenya Power has strongly advised all prepaid customers to purchase their electricity tokens well in advance of the scheduled downtime. This advisory particularly targets residential users who consume small amounts of power and rely on last-minute top-ups, as well as business operators who depend on a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply at night.
Failure to buy tokens before 11:00 PM could result in customers being unable to recharge their meters until the system is restored. This could lead to households going without power and businesses—especially those that operate overnight, such as small retailers and food vendors—suffering operational setbacks. Kenya Power is urging its users not to wait until the last minute to purchase electricity, as the system will not be accessible during the two-hour window.
The company clarified that this service interruption will only affect prepaid customers and is limited strictly to token purchases. Other services, including postpaid billing, power supply, and customer support operations, will remain unaffected. There is no indication that the maintenance will have any impact on the actual delivery of electricity, meaning that consumers with valid tokens already loaded into their meters will continue to have uninterrupted power during the maintenance window.
Kenya Power has assured its customers that the system will be promptly restored at 1:00 AM, and all operations will resume as normal. The utility provider also reiterated its commitment to maintaining high service standards and implementing technical upgrades that benefit the long-term reliability of electricity access in the country.
