Meru County has been engulfed in yet another leadership crisis, with a fresh wave of impeachment and censure motions targeting eight senior officials in Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s administration. The Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) leading the charge accuse the officials of incompetence, negligence, and failure to fulfill their mandates.
The officials facing impeachment include County Secretary Dr. Kiambi Atheru, Finance CEC Ibrahim Mutwiri, Roads CEC Thurania Ithana, Youth and Sports CEC Benjamin Mungania, and Legal Affairs CEC Dickson Munene. Meanwhile, Water CEC Jackson Muthamia, Education CEC Yusuf Kithure, and Trade CEC Harriet Makena have been named in censure motions for alleged inefficiency.
The MCAs argue that these executives have failed to execute their duties effectively, contributing to stalled county projects, financial mismanagement, and general inefficiency in service delivery. They also accuse some officials of skipping county assembly sessions, raising concerns about accountability and transparency.
The latest political chaos comes as Governor Kawira Mwangaza remains locked in a fierce legal battle to retain her seat following her impeachment by the Senate in August 2024. Her impeachment followed months of conflict between her and the MCAs, who accused her of violating the Constitution, abuse of office, and nepotism.
This was Mwangaza’s second impeachment attempt after surviving a similar move in 2022. However, the latest ouster gained traction, with overwhelming support from the Senate. The voting patterns on the charges were decisive:

Mwangaza’s impeachment was driven by several allegations, including:
Despite her impeachment, Mwangaza refused to go down without a fight, filing a petition in the High Court to challenge the decision.
In December 2024, High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye temporarily blocked the Senate’s decision, allowing Mwangaza to remain in office as the case is heard. The ruling stated that removing her before the legal process was complete could violate her rights and destabilize county leadership.
"The respondent's notice of motion is dismissed, ex-parte orders are confirmed and extended for a period of 120 days, and at that time, she will continue to serve as the Governor," ruled Justice Mwamuye.

The ruling gave Mwangaza temporary relief, but it also intensified political tensions in Meru, as MCAs remained adamant that she should step down.
While Mwangaza’s legal fight continues, MCAs remain firm in their stance, pushing for more accountability within her administration. The impeachment of her CECMs signals a broader effort to clean up the county government, but critics argue that it is also part of a political scheme to weaken her leadership further.
Meru residents are growing increasingly frustrated, as governance and development have been overshadowed by endless political wrangles. With a final court ruling on Mwangaza’s fate expected soon, the county remains on edge, waiting to see whether she will survive or be permanently removed from office.
The coming months will be decisive for Meru’s political future, with leadership hanging in the balance and public confidence in government at an all-time low.
