Unpaid care work remains an invisible force that underpins Kenya’s economy yet disproportionately burdens women. Studies show that women spend an average of 4.7 hours daily on domestic and caregiving responsibilities compared to 1.7 hours for men. Addressing this imbalance requires structural reforms, including the implementation of the long-overdue National Care Policy and economic incentives for caregivers.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to escalate, particularly in digital spaces. Alarmingly, 2024 marked the worst year for femicide in Kenya, with reported cases soaring to 168. Stricter laws, swift judicial responses, and survivor-centered support systems are critical in reversing this trend. Additionally, public awareness campaigns must be intensified to challenge harmful cultural norms that perpetuate violence against women.
Women’s Economic Empowerment: Unlocking Opportunities
Access to financial resources remains a key barrier to women’s economic independence. Increasing funding opportunities, breaking down restrictive financial policies, and promoting women-led businesses are vital steps toward achieving economic equity. By investing in women’s entrepreneurship and workforce participation, Kenya can unlock untapped economic potential.
The Climate Crisis and Gender Inequality
Emerging global challenges such as climate change disproportionately impact women, particularly in rural areas. As primary caregivers and providers of household resources, women face increased vulnerability to food insecurity and displacement. Gender-responsive climate policies are necessary to ensure women’s inclusion in environmental decision-making and sustainable development efforts.

Despite notable strides in healthcare, education, and policy advancements, systemic hurdles persist. Tackling gender inequality demands a multi-faceted approach involving government intervention, private sector collaboration, and community-driven initiatives.
