The tragic incident has left the country in mourning, with families and survivors grappling with the shock of a journey that ended in disaster.
According to medical officials, 28 other passengers injured in the crash remain in stable condition, though many are undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Surgeries are scheduled to conclude by Saturday afternoon.
Post-mortem examinations on the deceased are scheduled to be completed no later than Monday. Authorities have assured families that all necessary forensic processes are being expedited to enable timely identification and subsequent burials.
In a show of solidarity, the government has committed to covering all medical bills and burial expenses for the victims. Leaders have expressed condolences and emphasized that both immediate and long-term support will be extended to affected families.
The victims were part of a 54-member group of mourners returning from a burial ceremony in Kisumu West, headed to Nyakach in Kisumu County. The accident occurred as their school bus attempted to navigate a sharp corner at the notorious Coptic blackspot, ultimately rolling over and crashing.
At the time of the accident, 20 people were declared dead, including 10 men, 10 women, and an eight-month-old baby. The latest fatality brings the confirmed death toll to 26.
Families of the deceased are overwhelmed with grief, with many calling for psychosocial support as they mourn multiple losses within their communities. Survivors and relatives are also appealing for continued assistance beyond the immediate medical and burial arrangements, including trauma counseling and financial aid for dependents left behind.
