Bullet Bras Evolution || Where did Bullet Bras go to?
What began as a solemn, commemorative march by Gen Z protesters in Nairobi’s Central Business District descended into chaos on June 25. Demonstrators seeking to honor victims of last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests were met with live ammunition from police forces at several points along the route, culminating in multiple shootings and a mounting public outcry.
Following the outbreak of gunfire, at least three injured protesters were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). One was critically wounded and taken directly into the Intensive Care Unit for surgical intervention. The other two, having suffered lower-body wounds, were admitted to general wards and are being closely monitored by medical teams.
A fourth protester, shot in the thigh near Moi Avenue, was taken to Bliss Medical Centre. Though stable upon admission, he remains under observation and is expected to undergo further treatment.
Gunfire erupted at three distinct locations across the CBD, exposing key areas of tension:
-Kenyatta Avenue, in the vicinity of Parliament Buildings, where protesters were laying flowers when shots rang out.
-Moi Avenue, where a peaceful gathering was dispersed with force, resulting in a serious leg injury.
-Harambee Avenue, where a minor altercation between protesters and police escalated, leading to at least one additional gunshot.
Protest leaders have alleged that some officers fired without warning, turning the atmosphere from solemn to volatile.
Police authorities justified the use of force, claiming officers came under attack and had no choice but to respond. However, eyewitnesses deny any signs of violence from the demonstrators, describing the protest as disciplined and largely silent. Several officers have since been identified and referred to internal investigations, and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced a formal inquiry into the shooting incidents.
Social justice organizations, human rights advocates, and legal professionals have condemned the shootings in the strongest terms. They argue that deploying live ammunition against unarmed protesters violates constitutional protections and international policing standards. The leaders are calling for swift accountability, transparent judicial proceedings, and reparations for the injured.
The shootings mark a dangerous escalation in state-protester relations. Observers warn that unless officers suspected of unnecessary force face swift consequences, public trust in law enforcement and the safety of public assembly will continue to deteriorate. There is growing demand for reform of riot-control protocols and independent monitoring of police conduct.
While the protests have subsided temporarily, activists vow to escalate pressure through legal channels, media advocacy, and continued public engagement. They are calling on President Ruto’s administration to address the root causes of civil unrest—including brutality, economic grievances, and unfulfilled demands for justice for 2024 protest victims.
