Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been impeached by the County Assembly for the second time, following a dramatic and chaotic session held on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The impeachment motion was tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony and received overwhelming support from Members of the County Assembly (MCAs). A total of 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favor of removing the governor from office—well above the two-thirds threshold required by law.

Grounds for Impeachment: Abuse and Mismanagement Alleged

According to the motion, Governor Mutai was accused of:

  • -Gross violation of the Constitution

  • -Abuse of office

  • -Mismanagement of county resources

These allegations mirror those raised during his first impeachment attempt, which was ultimately overturned by the Senate. The current charges, however, are said to include new documentation and testimonies, though details remain under wraps as the case moves to the next stage.

Assembly Descends into Chaos After Vote

Tensions flared in the County Assembly shortly after Speaker confirmed the impeachment results, with reports of chaotic scenes and disruptions from both sides of the political divide.

Governor Mutai was physically present during the proceedings and was accompanied by his legal team, led by prominent lawyer Katwa Kigen. His legal team’s request to have the vote conducted by roll call was denied, leading to further dissatisfaction among his allies.

Impeachment Now Moves to the Senate

As per constitutional procedure, the matter will now proceed to the Senate, where Governor Mutai will be given another opportunity to defend himself.

If the Senate upholds the impeachment, he will be permanently removed from office. If it overturns the Assembly's decision, as it did in the first case, he will remain governor.

Previous Impeachment Was Blocked by Senate

This is not the first time Governor Mutai has faced the threat of ouster. In an earlier attempt, 31 MCAs had voted against him, but the Senate dismissed the charges, allowing him to remain in office. This time, however, 33 MCAs voted for his removal, showing growing dissent within the county leadership.

The unfolding political drama places Kericho County in a state of uncertainty, with residents and stakeholders keenly watching what direction the Senate proceedings will take in the coming weeks.
