Popular Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki, better known as Samidoh, has once again stirred political debate after taking aim at President William Ruto during a recent performance. The singer, who recently resigned from the police service, appears to be embracing his new life as a civilian while maintaining his outspoken stance on government matters.
During his live show, Samidoh cleverly modified the lyrics of a well-known Kikuyu tune, infusing it with subtle but pointed criticism of President Ruto. He chanted the slogan “wantam”, a phrase popularized by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which suggests that Ruto’s administration will only serve a single term before being voted out in 2027.
In his rendition, Samidoh implied that Kenyans were growing disillusioned with Ruto’s leadership, declaring: “He is our friend, not like Ruto; whatever he was giving us, we do not want it anymore. Our hatred can never make heaven and earth touch, wantam.”
This is not the first time Samidoh has clashed with the government. While serving in the police service, he was transferred to the Gilgil Anti-Stock Theft Unit after being accused of breaching the police code of neutrality by leading similar chants.
Controversy deepened when he travelled to the United States amid reports of an arrest warrant for deserting duty. However, leaked documents revealed he had officially been granted leave to travel. During his stay abroad, he continued with anti-government sentiments, at times alongside Gachagua.
Samidoh’s latest jabs at the president have sparked divided reactions online. Supporters applauded him for fearlessly voicing public frustrations, while critics accused him of disrespecting the head of state and turning his music into a political tool.
Despite his resignation from the police service, Samidoh’s bold criticism of President Ruto signals his continued willingness to challenge authority. His performances, charged with political undertones, show that the Mugithi star is ready to play a significant role in shaping conversations around leadership in Kenya.
